Text: Algebra and Trigonometry by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson, 2nd edition.

Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course.  See details below.

Attendance: Nearly perfect class attendance is essential for anyone who anticipates successfully completing this course. Attendance will be recorded daily, but it will not directly determine a portion of your grade.  If you do miss a class, you are responsible for any material covered or assignments made in that class.  Make-up quizzes and exams will only be given with appropriate documentation.

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily but not collected.

Exams: There will be four in-class hour exams, scheduled as follows:

In addition, there will be a comprehensive final exam, scheduled for Thursday, December 10 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Quizzes: There will be a 10-15-minute quiz on each Thursday on which an exam is not scheduled. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped, and the rest will be averaged to make your quiz average.

Grading Policy: Your final grade will be computed as follows:

15% Quiz Average
15% Each of the 4 in-class Exams
25% Final Exam

In addition, your final exam score may be used to replace the lowest of your 4 in-class exam grades.

Midterm: The last day to withdraw from a class without academic penalty is Thursday, Oct. 8.

ADA: Every attempt will be made to assist students with physical or learning impairments that have been documented with a letter from AASU's Director of Disabilities Services.

Honor Code: You are expected to abide by AASU's Honor Code (see Appendix I in the current catalog).  In this course, you may neither give nor receive aid on quizzes and exams.

Resources:  If you need help, remember that I am available in my office at the hours listed above, and by appointment.  Please come see me if you have questions!  In addition, there is a broad range of other resources available for you:

Calculators: Students in MATH 1113 will be required to use graphing calculators for assignments and for exams. If you presently own one of the graphing calculators currently on the market and know how to use it, it will suffice in this course. You will be expected to bring your calculator with you to class each day. The Texas Instruments calculator, TI-83 Plus, will be used in classroom demonstrations.

NOTE: Students who intend to purchase a calculator for this course may want to think carefully about needs they will have in subsequent courses. For instance, if the student intends to take several upper-level mathematics courses, he or she will want to purchase a calculator that can:

  1. evaluate functions (MATH 1116 and beyond)
  2. solve equations (MATH 1116 and beyond)
  3. compute definite integrals (MATH 1116 and beyond)
  4. do matrix operations (MATH 2160 and beyond)
The TI-82 and the TI-83(+) can do (1)-(3) and most of (4); the TI-85, TI-89, TI-92, and calculators in the HP 48 family can do (1)-(4). Students who will follow MATH 1113 with MATH 2200 may wish to consider a calculator that can do statistical operations. The TI-83(+), TI-89, TI-92 and HP 48 family are examples of such calculators.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is important that you study the instruction manual that comes with your calculator. In particular, your instructor is not an expert on all possible calculators. If you go to your instructor's office to ask a question about a calculator, be certain to carry your manual with you.
