13 Nights of Halloween 2000
with Jane T. Barnard

Capitalizing on holiday fun, local middle grades students joined with pre-service and in-service middle grades mathematics teachers at Armstrong Atlantic State University for some mathematics madness: activities centered around the book "The Thirteen Nights of Halloween." Both the young and restless as well as the more mature of the participants enjoyed making origami boxes and pinwheels, worm eating (do you know how many flat-tail worms are in a pound? how many gummi worms in a pound? how far 1,000,000 flat-tails put end-to-end would stretch?).  Also included was a little number theory and problem solving together with lots of fun and laughs. All the activities centered around mathematics and its inescapable links to the world around us. Participants agreed that enjoyable, hands-on activities go a long way toward building positive attitudes about mathematics and the critical reasoning skills essential in a problem-solving environment.
